What is biotechnology in cleaning products and why is it different from chemicals

What is biotechnology in cleaning products and why is it different from chemicals

By admin inBusiness Improvement, Eco, Sustainability

As technology continues to grow in our day-to-day lives, this also applies to the cleaning industry. In the past couple of years, there has been an increased interest in biotechnology and the market has grown for further products to be created using biotechnology. We believe that utilizing this technology is extremely important regarding the benefit of cleaning and creating a greener environment. Furthermore, this technology can offer better performance over traditional chemical cleaning that uses harsh chemicals that be harmful to both the environment and human health.

This blog is important for anyone interested in using safer and sustainable products, whether you are a homeowner looking to improve your sustainability or a business manager looking to reduce your company’s carbon footprint, this blog will provide you will valuable information on what biotechnology is, why it’s important and examples of these products.

In this blog, we will cover the following topics:

  1. What is biotechnology in cleaning products?
  2. How is this different to traditional cleaning chemicals?
  3. Why is it important?
  4. Examples of biotechnology products

What is biotechnology?

Biotechnology is the use of technology within biology which uses living organisms or their derivatives such as microbes such as enzymes to benefit our day-to-day life. For example, modern biotechnology provides technology and products to fight against diseases, alternative fuel solutions and enhance crops and create sustainable farming practices. In this blog post, we will focus on the cleaning aspects of biotechnology, how it works and the benefits of commercial and household cleaning.

Microbes, enzymes, and natural plant extracts can be used in biotech cleaning products to quickly break down and remove dirt, grime, and grease from surfaces.

The cleaning products contain microbes, particularly bacteria, that are in a dormant state called spores. When exposed to suitable conditions, the spores become active and the bacteria start reproducing, occupying the area where the product was applied.

These natural bacteria and the enzymes they create can clean surfaces just as effectively as, if not better than, standard chemicals, but without the environmental harm associated with harsh chemicals.

Why is biotechnology Important?

Some of the benefits of biotechnology-based cleaning products over traditional cleaning products are:

  • Because of their use of organic and naturally sourced ingredients, they reduce the risk to both the environment and the cleaners that use them, compared to harsher traditional chemicals.
  • According to the European Cleaning Journal, biotech cleaning products can break and remove dirt through hydrolysis and biodegradation, while chemical cleaners only solubilise and/or emulsify dirt. This means that biotechnology-based cleaning products can completely break down all harsh bacteria which then will remove any odours.
  • Due to residual cleaning, biotechnology can remain effective for up to 80 hours after usage, thereby decreasing the possibility of labour costs.
  • A lot of these products that use biotechnology have a higher dilution rate. This means you will get more cost-effective products in the long term.
  • They replace unwanted & harmful bacteria with healthy microbes, which have far preferable implications for our health.
  • Due to biotechnology having natural and bio ingredients, it can contribute to Co2 reductions, as traditional chemical products must source raw materials that can contribute to further transport and plastic waste.
  • The safer and healthier choice, according to this study, regular use of cleaning products has the same impact on your lungs that can be comparable to smoking a pack of cigarettes a day! Using cleaning products that only use biotechnology will reduce the possible risks seen in harsher chemical products.

Real Examples of Biotechnology

  1. BioHygiene is a brand that works to replace harmful and non-renewable chemical products with its range of biotech products, helping to improve the environment and human health. Some of their featured products include Complete Washroom Cleaner & All Purpose Sanitiser.
  2. InnuScience’s mission is to create innovative and sustainable biotech products and plan to make biotechnology-based products normal shelf products, instead of niche products. Some popular InnuScience products are their Nu-Action3 Concentrated Degreaser & Nu-Descaler Toilet Cleaner.

In Conclusion

To wrap up, considering this innovative biotechnology will be a sustainable and cost-effective move if you are a commercial cleaning business owner or even just for daily household cleaning. With now knowing what biotechnology is, how it compares to more traditional chemical cleaning, the benefits of biotechnology and some examples of companies paving the way for this technology, you will now be able to make that jump to biotechnology.
